About the Society
Our Story
The Ancient History Society of Port Elizabeth was founded in 2007 by Prof. Nicholas Allen and Prof. Peter Loyson.
The society was first hosted at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University with a modest membership. Initially the society was a social club of like-minded individuals. Ancient history in its broadest sense was discussed and talks covering a wide spectrum of topics were held.
With the increase in interest and attendance the meetings were moved to the Italian Sporting Club in Charlo where a light meal with wine was offered before the talks. Today the society boasts large attendance, a reputation for interesting and accessible talks and a much anticipated end of year function.
Scope
The AHS views ancient history as the study of the past before the modern age (the modern age is a broad and relative concept which incorporates cultures and civilisations, such as the Vikings, which were ancient in their development but appeared in later time periods). The AHS takes a broad view of ancient history, which includes all aspects of ancient life and cultures (i.e. religion, technology, war, politics, science, trade, art, cooking, literature etc.). This includes the pre-history of humankind and the sparks of civilisation.
